A “WORLD TOUR” OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS!

One of this blog’s readers asked me to “summarize” my “favorite things” about this trip.  Oh my!  I can’t possibly summarize four months, seven continents, over 20 countries and 40 cities in a single page.  So I’ll begin here and follow with some other photographic highlights.  Our magical journey around the world has not only taken us TO some of the most incredible places on Earth, but it has taken us ON some of the most fun and unique vehicles, vessels, animals and other modes of transportation.  To illustrate the whirlwind “ride”:
  • January 5, 2012: We left our house in George's pick-up truck, then boarded a commercial jet and flew to Ft. Lauderdale. We were picked up at the airport and transported to our hotel in a large bus.
  • January 6, 2012: We took a taxi van to Costco for supplies and then boarded the mid-sized cruiseship, ms Amsterdam (Holland America Line), which would carry us around the world over the next four months.

  • January 9, 2012: We toured Dominica in a small, 12-person Toyota minivan.
  • January 10, 2012: We rode a zip line in Barbados and got there in a large, fancy bus.
  • January 13, 2012: We rode a tender ferry from the ship to the dock, then took a bus ride to the city, and then a regional wooden boat through the rivers and jungles in Belem, Brazil.
  • Recife 172 (640x427)January 16, 2012: We took a motor coach ride and then an 8-person 4-wheel drive vehicle on safari in Recife, Brazil .

  • January 19-20, 2012: We toured Rio in a van by day and in a motor coach by night; we rode the cable car to Sugar Loaf MoRio de Janeiro 473 (640x427)untain; and we took a cab to and from a local shopping mall.

  • January 23-24, 2012: In Buenos Aires, we traveled by shuttle bus from ship to dock, by van from dock to airport, by airplane from BA to Iguazu, by van from Iguazu Airport to Iguazu National Park, by open-air train and speed boat to see (and get drenched by) some of the falls, by open-air "Jungle" truck to traverse thru the forest, by bus to tour BA, and by cab to get to Palermo Soho and back to the ship.

  • January 25, 2012: We had a private van tour in Montevideo, Uruguay.
  • January 28, 2012: We took an adventurous trek over gravel roads, peat bogs, walls of dirt, etc. to see the penguins in the Falkland Islands in an off-road 4X4!

  • February 3, 2012: Bill toured the Beagle Channel by double-decker catamaran, and the Tierra del Fuego National Park in Ushuaia, Argentina by bus.
  • February 4, 2012: In Punta Arenas, Chile, we traveled by cab and bus to/from the ski area, rode a ski lift and hiked (the oldest form of transportation).
  • February 11, 2012: We visited the central town in Easter Island in a packed pick-up truck (with Bill in the back), with a return to the beach by cab. We then toured the Moai statues by mini-bus.
  • February 16, 2012: We toured Tahiti by cab and then road a local island boat to go snorkeling and touring.

  • February 16-19, 2012: We took a ferry to and from Moorea, French Polynesia, then road in a car with a local couple to our hotel; we rented a car and toured the island's landscape; then we went snorkeling and touring by local island boat; we got to the airport by taxi and then flew in a large jet to New Zealand.
  • February 20-23, 2012: We got around New Zealand by rental car and also rode a ferry boat and gondola to see Rotorua; then we boarded a jet to fly to Sydney.
  • February 23-27, 2012: In Sydney, we got around by rental car; in the Blue Mountains, we rode the Skyway (gondola), cableway (cable car) down a mountain and steepest railway ever up the mountain; we also climbed the bridge and toured this magnificent city and its harbour and beaches by motor coach, luxury day cruiser (boat), hop-on, hop-off bus and even by helicopter! We also took a cab.

  • February 27-29, 2012: We flew to Cairns and experienced this fascinating place, its rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef by cab, train, Skyrail/gondola, bus and high-speed catamaran.

  • March 5, 2012: We took a walking tour in search of Komodo dragons on Komodo Island, Indonesia
  • March 6, 2012: In Lombok, Indonesia, we traveled by bus, horse cart, taxi van to the airport and then by jet (to Bali)!

  • March 6-9, 2012: In Bali, Indonesia, we traveled by SUV and van.
  • March 9-12, 2012: We flew to Hong Kong and saw the vibrant city by regular and double-decker (open-air) busses, taxi, high-speed ferry, Peak tram funicular, sampan boat and subway.

  • March 14, 2012: We saw Nha Trang, Vietnam by bus, cab and cable car (to Vinpearl Land).

  • March 15, 2012: In Ho Chi Minh City, we explored by bus and cyclo tour .

  • March 18-19, 2012: We saw Singapore, its nighttime animal park and Sentosa/Universal Studios by motor coach, hop-on, hop-off bus, taxi and cable car -- not to mention all the roller coasters and rides that we rode at Universal Studios

  • March 21, 2012: In Phuket, Thailand, we took a bus to the marina, where we traveled by speed boat to Phi Phi and Khai Islands

  • March 24, 2012: We toured Sri Lanka by bus and even got to ride on an elephant - bare back!

  • March 26-28, 2012: We traversed India by taxi cab, plane, SUV, ferry, dock train and even a buggy ride.

  • April 5, 2012: We got to Luxor, Egypt by tender boat, then by a large tour van. We toured the same way, and by a ferry boat from the East to the West Bank of the Nile River! We also rode a shuttle train at one of the sites.
  • April 6, 2012: In Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, we traveled by tender boat, van, car, golf cart (at the hotel) and went took a camel ride in the desert!

  • April 7, 2012: We flew to Cairo and visited the Pyramids and other sights by tour van; at night, we took a dinner cruise on the Nile via river boat. We also got around our hotel on a golf cart.
  • April 8-10, 2012: We flew to Athens and toured this historic center by cab, funicular, motor coach and "hop on hop off" bus.

  • April 11, 2012: In Olympia, Greece, we got around by motor coach and cab.
  • April 12, 2012: We saw Messina (Sicily), Italy by bus.
  • April 13, 2012: We saw the (rainy, but otherwise beautiful) Isle of Capri in Italy by jetfoil and funicular.
  • April 14, 2012: We toured Corsica, France by bus.
  • April 15-16, 2012: Our time in Barcelona, Spain was spent on a small bus and a cab.
  • April 18, 2012: In Seville, Spain, we travelled by bus.
  • April 20, 2012: In our final port of Madeira, Portugal, we ascended a mountain by cable car and returned in a basket sleigh; we also rode around in yet another bus.

These modes of transportation were as varied and unique as the ports themselves and made the trip memorable ...
