∙ Napoleon formed extensive allegiances and appointed family members and friends to rule other European countries
∙ Yet, his armies collapsed after they invaded Russia in 1812, and he was forced to abdicate and exiled to the island of Elba – the lion bit the dragon and got burned!
∙ Less than a year later, he escaped Elba and returned to power, but his empire failed after his final defeat at Waterloo in 1815 (not just a great Abba song!)
∙ He spent the last 6 years of his life (1815-1821) confined by the British on the Island of Saint Helena; there’s a debate whether he died of stomach cancer or arsenic poisoning
